Top 100

Look at the latest list of the area's TOP 100 privately-held companies, and one thing stands out: growth. During the year 2000, revenues increased more than 11 percent to top $4.1 billion -- about the same amount it took 8.5 million visitors to spend in New Orleans last year. The employee base grew 4.1 percent to more than 20,000 workers -- half the population of Webster Parish.

The second annual top 100 list, commissioned by The Times and Hibernia National Bank and compiles by the LSUS Center for Business and Economic Research, acts as snapshot of our economy by profiling the biggest earners of the previous year.

Private companies hold their own in weak economy
This time a year ago, the buzzword was growth.

Projects that had been in the works for years - from new shopping centers to plant expansions - had opened or were under way. Consumers appeared ready to hand over dollars for houses and automobiles, while the promise of thousands of new jobs spurred apartment construction.
Area's big earners retain spot in the Top 10
If you compared last year's Top 100 list of privately held companies to this year's ranking, you might think you were looking at a duplicate. At the head of the list are the same five companies. Only when you get to No. 6 do you realize the slight shakeup that took place in the ranking of 2001 revenue.
